Video to GIF

Add your video, type the start and the length, download the GIF. The clip is converted in your browser, so the video stays on your computer. The clip can be 30 seconds at most.

How it works

  1. Choose your video file or drag it into the drop area.
  2. Type the start second and the length. Pick the frame rate and the width.
  3. Press Make GIF and download the file.

Why this tool

  • The video stays on your computer. There is no upload.
  • The start and the length are given in seconds. 30 seconds at most.
  • Frame rate of 5, 10 or 15 fps.
  • Width of 240, 320, 480 or 640 pixels. The height keeps the aspect ratio.
  • The color palette comes from your clip, so bands are weaker and the file is smaller.

A GIF is still the easiest moving image to share. Chat apps, forums, bug reports and documentation show it without a player. To show how a bug appears, or to share one moment from a clip, a GIF is often more practical than a video file.

The tool converts the clip in two passes. First it builds a color palette from that clip only. Then it writes the frames with this palette. A GIF holds 256 colors at most. Because the palette comes from your clip, the bands in a sky or in skin tones are much weaker, and the file is smaller.

Three settings control the size. The length matters most: a GIF stores every frame on its own, so ten seconds is twice the size of five seconds. The frame rate comes second. 10 fps looks smooth. 5 fps is enough for a screen recording or for text. The width comes third. 320 pixels shows at a normal size in chat apps.

The work runs in your browser. The video engine downloads once, about 30 MB, and stays in the cache. The engine uses one core, so even a ten-second clip can take about half a minute.

To make an animation from photos, "GIF Maker" joins images in order. To keep the clip as a video, "Trim Video" holds the quality and gives a much smaller file.

Frequently asked questions

Does my file go to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser. The video never leaves your computer. Open the network tab and check it yourself.

Why is it slow?

The engine runs on one core in the browser, and a GIF needs two passes: first the palette, then the frames. A lower width or frame rate makes it faster.

Why do I wait on the first run?

The video engine downloads once, about 30 MB. After that it comes from the browser cache.

Which formats does it open?

MP4, MOV, M4V, WEBM, MKV, AVI, 3GP and MTS. The output is GIF.

Why is the GIF so large?

A GIF stores every frame on its own and does not compress like a video. 10 fps at 320 pixels is enough for most sharing.

Why is there a 30 second limit?

A long GIF grows to hundreds of megabytes and will not open in a browser. For a longer clip, use "Trim Video" and keep it as MP4.
