A Word file carries two risks when you send it. The document can shift on the other side, because a different version, a different font or a different page setup moves the lines. The document can also be edited on arrival, which you rarely want for a quote, a contract or a report. A PDF answers both: the file looks the same on every device, and the content is not easy to change.
LibreOffice on our server does the conversion. It opens the document, works out the page layout and writes a PDF. Heading levels, tables, lists, headers and footers, page numbers and image placement are kept. A table of contents gets its page numbers recalculated.
Two points need care. A font you installed only on your own computer may have no match on the server, so a close font takes its place and line breaks can move. Text boxes, frames and multi-column layouts can also come out differently. Look through the result once.
This tool runs on our server, because reading office formats correctly needs a full office engine. Your file travels over an encrypted connection and is deleted as soon as the job ends. If the PDF is large, "Compress PDF" makes it smaller.

The result is similar. This tool also works on a computer without Word, and on a phone or a tablet.
