MOV to MP4
Add your MOV, MKV, WEBM or AVI file and download it as MP4. When the codec fits MP4, the picture is not re-encoded. The work takes seconds and the quality stays the same.

Your files never leave your computerHow it works
- Choose your video files or drag them into the drop area.
- When the codec fits, you set nothing. You can select "Always re-encode" if you want.
- Press Make MP4 and download the files.
Why this tool
- The video stays on your computer. There is no upload.
- With a compatible codec, only the container changes and the picture is not re-encoded.
- A codec that does not fit, such as HEVC or ProRes, is written as H.264.
- It opens MOV, MKV, WEBM, AVI, 3GP, MTS and M4V.
- Convert several files at the same time. 200 MB per file.
iPhone and Mac cameras write video in a MOV container. The container is the outer layer of the file. The picture inside is often already H.264. On Windows, some programs do not open MOV. Many websites refuse the upload. Older televisions and players do not see the file. MKV and AVI have the same problem.
The tool first tries the cheapest path: a straight copy. The picture and audio streams move into a new MP4 container with no decode. The quality does not change, the size stays about the same, and the work takes seconds. A 500 MB MOV becomes an MP4 in a few seconds this way.
The straight copy does not work for every file. New iPhone models record in HEVC. Cameras and editors write ProRes or PCM audio. These do not play everywhere inside an MP4 container. For such a file, the tool writes the picture as H.264 and the audio as AAC. This step runs on one core in the browser, so a one-minute 1080p recording can take a few minutes.
Your files stay on your computer. The video engine downloads once, about 30 MB, and stays in the cache.
If the new file is still large, "Compress Video" lets you pick a quality and a resolution. If you need one part only, cut it first with "Trim Video". The size drops with the length.
Frequently asked questions
Does my file go to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. The video never leaves your computer. Open the network tab and check it yourself.
Why does it take seconds sometimes and minutes at other times?
When the codec fits MP4, only the container changes, which takes seconds. When it does not fit, the picture is re-encoded on one core, which can take minutes.
Why do I wait on the first run?
The video engine downloads once, about 30 MB. After that it comes from the browser cache.
Which formats does it open?
MOV, MKV, WEBM, AVI, 3GP, MTS, M4V and MP4. The output is always MP4.
Does the quality drop?
Not with a straight copy, because the frames move as they are. A re-encode uses H.264 at CRF 23, and the difference is hard to see in most recordings.
Why is my iPhone video re-encoded?
New iPhone models record in HEVC. HEVC does not play in every player, so the file is written as H.264.
