Why this tool
- Your file stays on your computer. There is no upload.
- Convert several videos at the same time.
- Three bit rates: 128, 192 and 320 kbps.
- The picture is not encoded, so this is much faster than video compression.
- Free. No account, no watermark. 200 MB per file.
You often need the audio of a video. A lecture or a meeting to hear on a walk, an interview to send to a transcription tool, the music from a clip you shot. You do not need a video editor for this.
The tool never touches the picture track. It reads the audio track and writes it as MP3. Because there is no video encoding, the work is much faster than video compression. A ten-minute recording usually finishes in about half a minute.
The bit rate sets the file size and the audio quality. For speech, 128 kbps is enough and keeps the file small. 192 kbps is the right choice for most work. For music or for an archive copy, use 320 kbps. Keep one point in mind: the audio in the source video is already compressed, so 320 kbps does not add quality above the source. It only limits the new loss.
The work runs in your browser. The audio engine downloads once, about 30 MB, and stays in the cache. Your file does not leave your computer. You can select several videos. Each one becomes its own MP3, and the set downloads as a zip.
If you need a format other than MP3, "Audio Converter" also writes WAV, OGG, M4A and FLAC. To keep only a part of the audio, "Trim Audio" lets you set a start and an end.
Frequently asked questions
Does my file go to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. The video never leaves your computer. Open the network tab and check it yourself.
Why do I wait on the first run?
The audio engine downloads once, about 30 MB. After that it comes from the browser cache and you do not wait again.
Why is it slow for some files?
The engine runs on one core in the browser. Audio extraction is fast next to video encoding, but a one-hour recording can still take minutes.
Which formats does it open?
MP4, MOV, M4V, WEBM, MKV, AVI, 3GP and MTS. The output is MP3.
Does the audio quality drop?
The audio is re-encoded. At 192 kbps most recordings sound like the source. Use 320 kbps for music.
What if the video has no audio?
The tool skips that file and shows a warning. The other files in the list continue.
