Why this tool
- Your file stays on your computer. There is no upload.
- A player sits on the page, so you do not type the time by hand.
- The output keeps the format of the input.
- A straight copy is used when the file allows it, so the quality holds.
- Write the time as 1:05 or as 65. 200 MB per file.
Most audio work starts with a small piece of a long file. Two minutes to quote from a one-hour interview, twenty seconds of a song for a ringtone, one section of a podcast episode to share. This tool takes out that piece.
A player sits on the page. Drop the file and it plays. Move it to the moment you want, and the "Current time" button writes the seconds into the box. You can also type the time by hand. 1:05 and 65 give the same moment. Leave the end box empty and the clip runs to the end of the file.
The tool first tries a straight copy. The audio data moves into the new file with no decode. Nothing is lost and the work takes seconds. The straight copy fails for some files. The clip is then re-encoded in the same format. In a lossy format this means a small quality loss. In WAV and FLAC there is no loss.
The output keeps the format of the input. An MP3 in gives an MP3 out. A WAV in gives a WAV out. When the tool cannot write a format, it saves the clip as MP3 and shows a warning.
To change the format of the clip, "Audio Converter" offers five targets. To join several clips one after another, "Merge Audio" lets you set the order in the list.
Frequently asked questions
Does my file go to a server?
No. The trim runs in your browser. Your file never leaves your computer. Open the network tab and check it yourself.
Which formats does it open?
MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, OPUS, FLAC and AIFF. You can also give it a video file. The output keeps the format of the input.
Why do I wait sometimes?
The audio engine downloads once, about 30 MB, then comes from the cache. The engine runs on one core, so a trim on a long recording can take minutes.
Does the quality drop?
Not with a straight copy, because the data moves as it is. When the copy fails, the clip is re-encoded in the same format, which adds a small loss in a lossy format.
Can I make a ringtone?
Yes. Take a clip of 20 to 30 seconds. An iPhone needs M4R, so take the clip as M4A and change the extension.
How do I write the time?
Write it as 1:05 or as 65. Both give the same moment. Leave the end empty and the clip runs to the end of the file.
