How it works
- Choose your PDF file or drag it into the drop area.
- Type the password, then type it again to confirm.
- Press Protect and download the locked file.
Why this tool
- Your file and your password stay on your computer.
- AES-256 open password.
- Option to block printing.
- Option to block text copying.
- The password is never stored. A lost password cannot be recovered.
A payslip, a medical report, a draft contract, a copy of an ID. These files travel by email, and a message can always reach the wrong person. An open password blocks that cheaply: even in the wrong inbox, the content stays unreadable.
The tool encrypts the file with AES-256. It asks for the password twice, because a mistyped password locks the file for good. Nobody can recover it, and we hold no copy, because the file and the password both stay on your computer. Save the password in a password manager and send it to the reader through a separate channel.
Two extra options exist: block printing and block text copying. These are instructions to reader software. A reader that follows the rules turns those buttons off, while another program can ignore them. They work as a deterrent. The open password is the real lock.
Use "Unlock PDF" when you want the password gone. If you also plan to merge or compress the file, do that first, because most tools cannot open a protected PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Is my password sent anywhere?
No. The encryption runs in your browser. Your password and your file never leave your computer and are never written to a server.
What happens if I forget the password?
The file will not open. Nobody can recover it, and we cannot recover it either. Save the password in a password manager.
How strong is the encryption?
The tool uses AES-256. That is the strongest standard method current PDF readers support.
How useful is the print block?
A reader that follows the rules turns off its print and copy buttons. It is a courtesy lock, not a wall. The open password is the real protection.
What is the size limit?
200 MB per file and 50 files at a time. Pro allows 2 GB.
Can I remove the password later?
Yes. Give the file and the password to "Unlock PDF" and it writes an unprotected copy.
