Word count usually matters because of a limit. University essays ask for 2500 words. Journal abstracts ask for 250 words. Scholarship forms often ask for 500 words. Some forms count characters instead of words, with limits like 4000 characters. This tool shows both at the same time, with and without spaces.
Search engine text has other limits. A page title stays whole in the result list at 50 to 60 characters. A meta description works well at 150 to 160 characters. Keep the counter open while you write a product description or a blog intro. Paste the text and read the number.
The reading time uses 200 words per minute. That is an average adult reader. Speech is slower. For a presentation or a video voice-over, 130 words per minute is closer. A three minute video needs about 390 words.
The top words list shows what the text repeats. If you used one word ten times, it appears at the top. With the common words box on, the tool skips conjunctions and prepositions, so only subject words remain.
The count runs in your browser. The text does not go to a server. You can safely paste an unpublished article, a draft contract or a private note.
Frequently asked questions
How does the tool count words?
It uses the Intl.Segmenter feature of your browser to find word limits. A word with an apostrophe or a hyphen counts as one word. Numbers count as words.
How is the reading time found?
Reading uses 200 words per minute. Speaking uses 130 words per minute. The real speed changes with the subject and the reader, so treat it as an estimate.
Can I use it for an academic word limit?
Yes. But check what your institution counts. Most departments count words. Some journals ask for characters. Both values are here.
Is my text stored?
No. The count runs in your browser. The text does not go to a server. It is gone when you close the page.
Why does it skip common words?
Words like "the, a, and" fill the list. The tool skips them by default. Clear the box and it counts every word.
Why two character counts?
Social media and SMS count spaces. Some application forms ask for the count without spaces. The tool shows both.
