Looking for a change by eye is slow work. Which clause moved in the second draft of a contract? Which line is new in this version of the code? Which sentence did the translator skip? A diff tool answers in a second.
The tool works line by line. The left text is the old one. The right text is the new one. In the result, removed lines are red, added lines are green and equal lines stay plain. Four numbers sit above: added lines, removed lines, equal lines and a similarity value. The similarity value gives a rough measure of the overlap.
Set the detail to Word and the tool also marks the change inside a line. If one word changed in a long paragraph, only word detail shows it.
Two options remove false differences. Ignore whitespace skips indent and trailing spaces, which helps a lot with code and formatted text. Ignore case treats lines that differ only in letter case as equal.
There is a limit of 1600 lines per side. Above that the tool gives a rough result and shows a warning. Compare a book-length text section by section.
The texts stay in your browser. They do not go to a server and they are not stored. It is safe to paste a draft contract, a medical note or closed source code.

How does the tool find the difference?
It matches lines with the longest common subsequence (LCS) method. It first removes the shared start and end, then compares the middle part.
What does word detail show?
It marks which word changed inside a changed line. That helps in long sentences where only one word moved.
How long can the texts be?
The full compare works up to 1600 lines per side. Above that the tool gives a rough result and shows a warning. Split the text and compare the parts.
Can I compare a Word or PDF file?
Not directly. Copy the text and paste it. For a PDF, use the "PDF to Text" tool first.
What does ignore whitespace do?
