Page numbers matter most after you collect documents from several sources into one file. In a merged file the original numbers conflict, and without one continuous count you cannot tell a colleague to look at page seven. Court bundles, thesis appendices, tender folders and meeting packs all need this.
There are three formats. The plain format prints the figure alone and takes the least space. The "Page 1" format reads well in formal correspondence. The "1 / 10" format also shows the total, which helps a reader notice a missing sheet in a printed copy.
The start number matters for covers and contents pages. Set it to 0 and the cover shows 0 while the body starts at 1. The position can be the footer or the header, at the left, the center or the right. For double-sided printing the bottom outer corner is easiest to scan.
The numbers are drawn in the margin over the page content and are written into the file for good. Keep your source file, because that is where you go back to.
Frequently asked questions
Does my file go to a server?
No. The numbers are drawn in your browser. Your file never leaves your computer.
Can I keep the cover out of the count?
Set the start number to 0. The cover becomes 0 and the second page starts at 1. An option to leave the cover blank is not available yet.
What is the 1 / 10 format for?
It shows the total page count. On paper it makes a missing page easy to spot.
Can the numbers land on existing text?
Numbers go in the margin. On a design that runs to the page edge they can overlap, so change the position or use a smaller text size.
What is the size limit?
200 MB per file and 50 files at a time. Pro allows 2 GB.
Can I remove the numbers later?
The numbers are drawn onto the page and cannot be undone. Keep your source file and start from it if you need to.
